Frontage Levies
Under Section 432(1) of the City of Winnipeg Charter, Council may by by-law impose frontage taxes, which must be charged separately and apart from other taxes on real property.
Council must establish a uniform rate to be applied throughout the city for each frontage tax imposed. The current rate per frontage foot is $2.55.
Calculation of the frontage levy is based on the length of the boundaries (frontage) of the parcel that front or abut any portion of the service multiplied by the current rate per frontage foot or frontage foot x rate per frontage foot = frontage levy.
Example:
A property as a frontage measurement of 50 feet. The calculation is:
Frontage foot x rate per frontage foot = frontage levy
or
50 x $2.55 = $127.50
How frontage taxes may be used
Money from a frontage tax may be used for the
(a) upgrading, repair, replacement and maintenance of water and sewer mains and streets and sidewalks; and
(b) installation, upgrading, repair, replacement and maintenance of lighting in streets and back lanes.
How will the frontage taxes be used?
The money raised from the frontage levy will be used to repair or replace the streets infrastructure. This does not necessarily mean that the street in front of your house will be repaired or replaced this year but the streets in the most need of repair or replacement in the City will be fixed as required.
